On our trip from Colorado to the Artic Circle Stacey Stewart and I charted a route that would lead us through a spectacular collection of these places during what we hoped would peak wildflower season. I stumbled over fuzzy satellite imagery of this area in my research and was taken aback by what looked like sculpted terraces of rock for amphitheatres in this jagged landscape. Miles of forest roads lead to the edge of a bridgeless rushing river and a distinct abscence of any signs about any trail. To reach this basin one need only cross the river and slog 15 steep, unspectacular miles through what occasionally could be called a trail, but mostly consists of avalanche chutes choked with fallen trees. Needless to say, the juxtaposition of effort vs. reward was extreme, but all doubts were erased when I caught this view. We enjoyed three days exploring around this area and as I look at this image there are still places I am upset I didn't get to. I guess I'll have to make the slog again sometime soon. As a proud card carrying ADHD guy, I'm a sucker for pterodactyls flying through rainbows arcing over erupting volcanoes with a couple of flowers in the foreground, but some folks still appreciate nuance and refinement. Let me know what camp you're in. Also curious about people's color preferences. This scene has an analogous color palette, which basically means all the colors are varying degrees of one of color, blue in this case. The vast majority of my work relies on complimentary color palette where most tones lie on the opposite side of the color spectrum from each other to create warm/cool contrast. Take a moment to think about the colors of clothes, decor and imagery you are drawn to and let me know in the comments whether you tend to keep it analogous or complimentary, warm or cool. Back to the scene itself, the juxtaposition of these wild horses in such a un-wild hockey formation in front of such a wild and stormy back drop is what this image is all about for me. The expected iconic-ness of their stereotypical horse poses in such an atypical setting is akin to why comedy with people (ex: nuns) doing unexpected things (ex: talking about how hot pastor Jim is) always works. They also say you should not kick it in slot canyons if there is a chance of rain because of flash flood potential... I scouted my exit and stayed down here anyway. This is the base of a dryfall that looks like a meteor hit it and dropped a few seeds. This is a dryfall that became a waterfall about 30 minutes after this was snapped. I make light of this, but if you ever find yourself in this situation, just get out of the slot canyon. This was 80% luck and a little planning. I found what looked like the shadow of an arch on google maps, but second guessed whether such a thing could even be discerned accurately. Fortunately, this puppy looked to be only a mile or so from the nearest road and also was in the vicinity of some other cool stuff I was checking out. So out into the desert I went with hope in my heart and sand in my shoes. Whenever I am pre-scouting locations using satellite imagery I form hypotheses about what I expect a given area to look like when I get there. The validity of what I envision matching the reality of what is there is hit or miss, but generally gets better the more time I spend "ground testing" my theories. While the northern lights are usually present on and above the northern horizon, on this night they were so strong they danced over this iconic peak to the southwest of our camp. Very rarely have I ever found a Yucca or any other plant so isolated and devoid of other natural clutter. The late afternoon light was unremarkable, but after star watching the night before I realized that I might have a shot to line up things up at night. A little research confirmed this and thus a 3am wake up call was in order. What is the worst road you've ever been on and why in the heck where you driving on it? The vast majority of my photos come from far flung corners of the earth usually with a lot of blood sweat and tears, but you can drive right up to this lake in Colorado Rockies. That said the road is consistently awful for the entire 17 miles, which took us 3 hours to get thru. It was never so dangerous and terrible that you are forced to turn around just nightmarishly ridden with huge potholes, rocks and snowbanks that never relent. If you reach the lake there's a charming beaver, lots of flowers and the continental divide, but I probably will never go back. The water cycle is truly working in hyper-speed up here The three days I was there bore that out. After a small break in the clouds the sun quickly started evaporating everything throwing mist and great shafts of light all over the place. I shot this area of arcing mossy limbs earlier in total rainy gloom and returned here to find this gloriously backlit scene. As the afternoon progressed the light became more predictable with a few long strips of clouds partially covering the sky, but the wind showing no signs of relenting. I returned to this spot hoping its location on the southwest side of a steep hill would afford me some respite to shoot non-blurry focus stacked flowers in fading light. That was very optimistic. This picture is made up of a series of different focus points taken between huge gusts of wind and meticulously blended together by hand. Perhaps, I'm just a sucker for badlands and missing the southwest, but I couldn't disagree more. I think the depth and overall shape of these foothills are spectacular. By no means was this area the most flower dense or colorful, but just after sunset the sky cast a nice orangey light across these hills and I couldn't resist some pre-dinner telephoto fun. Of the 20 or so evenings I was able to see the northern lights this was one of the two best displays. While the northern lights are usually present on and above the northern horizon, on this night they were so strong they danced over this iconic peak to the southwest of our camp. There was no moon, but the lights were so bright they lit up the entire landscape and allowed me to capture great detail in this freezing lake. With the long distances, heavy packs, steep slippery routes and average nightly temperatures of 2 degrees Fahrenheit, this was one of the most physically challenging, but rewarding trips I've ever taken. Very rarely have I ever found a Yucca or any other plant so isolated and devoid of other natural clutter. The late afternoon light was unremarkable, but after star watching the night before I realized that I might have a shot to line up things up at night. A little research confirmed this and thus a 3am wake up call was in order. What is the worst road you've ever been on and why in the heck where you driving on it? The vast majority of my photos come from far flung corners of the earth usually with a lot of blood sweat and tears, but you can drive right up to this lake in Colorado Rockies. That said the road is consistently awful for the entire 17 miles, which took us 3 hours to get thru. It was never so dangerous and terrible that you are forced to turn around just nightmarishly ridden with huge potholes, rocks and snowbanks that never relent. If you reach the lake there's a charming beaver, lots of flowers and the continental divide, but I probably will never go back. They also say you should not kick it in slot canyons if there is a chance of rain because of flash flood potential... I scouted my exit and stayed down here anyway. This is the base of a dryfall that looks like a meteor hit it and dropped a few seeds. This is a dryfall that became a waterfall about 30 minutes after this was snapped. I make light of this, but if you ever find yourself in this situation, just get out of the slot canyon. This was 80% luck and a little planning. I found what looked like the shadow of an arch on google maps, but second guessed whether such a thing could even be discerned accurately. Fortunately, this puppy looked to be only a mile or so from the nearest road and also was in the vicinity of some other cool stuff I was checking out. So out into the desert I went with hope in my heart and sand in my shoes. Whenever I am pre-scouting locations using satellite imagery I form hypotheses about what I expect a given area to look like when I get there. The validity of what I envision matching the reality of what is there is hit or miss, but generally gets better the more time I spend "ground testing" my theories. On our trip from Colorado to the Artic Circle Stacey Stewart and I charted a route that would lead us through a spectacular collection of these places during what we hoped would peak wildflower season. I stumbled over fuzzy satellite imagery of this area in my research and was taken aback by what looked like sculpted terraces of rock for amphitheatres in this jagged landscape. Miles of forest roads lead to the edge of a bridgeless rushing river and a distinct abscence of any signs about any trail. To reach this basin one need only cross the river and slog 15 steep, unspectacular miles through what occasionally could be called a trail, but mostly consists of avalanche chutes choked with fallen trees. Needless to say, the juxtaposition of effort vs. reward was extreme, but all doubts were erased when I caught this view. We enjoyed three days exploring around this area and as I look at this image there are still places I am upset I didn't get to. I guess I'll have to make the slog again sometime soon. As a proud card carrying ADHD guy, I'm a sucker for pterodactyls flying through rainbows arcing over erupting volcanoes with a couple of flowers in the foreground, but some folks still appreciate nuance and refinement. Let me know what camp you're in. Also curious about people's color preferences. This scene has an analogous color palette, which basically means all the colors are varying degrees of one of color, blue in this case. The vast majority of my work relies on complimentary color palette where most tones lie on the opposite side of the color spectrum from each other to create warm/cool contrast. Take a moment to think about the colors of clothes, decor and imagery you are drawn to and let me know in the comments whether you tend to keep it analogous or complimentary, warm or cool. Back to the scene itself, the juxtaposition of these wild horses in such a un-wild hockey formation in front of such a wild and stormy back drop is what this image is all about for me. The expected iconic-ness of their stereotypical horse poses in such an atypical setting is akin to why comedy with people (ex: nuns) doing unexpected things (ex: talking about how hot pastor Jim is) always works. On our trip from Colorado to the Artic Circle I charted a route that would lead us through a spectacular collection of these places during what I hoped would peak wildflower season. I stumbled over fuzzy satellite imagery of this area in my research and was taken aback by what looked like sculpted terraces of rock for amphitheatres in this jagged landscape. Miles of forest roads lead to the edge of a bridgeless rushing river and a distinct abscence of any signs about any trail. To reach this basin one need only cross the river and slog 15 steep, unspectacular miles through what occasionally could be called a trail, but mostly consists of avalanche chutes choked with fallen trees. Needless to say, the juxtaposition of effort vs. reward was extreme, but all doubts were erased when I caught this view. We enjoyed three days exploring around this area and as I look at this image there are still places I am upset I didn't get to. I guess I'll have to make the slog again sometime soon. Of the 20 or so evenings I was able to see the northern lights this was one of the two best displays. While the northern lights are usually present on and above the northern horizon, on this night they were so strong they danced over this iconic peak to the southwest of our camp. There was no moon, but the lights were so bright they lit up the entire landscape and allowed me to capture great detail in this freezing lake. The bonus to this whole experience was that after about 20 miles (one-way) backpacking through steep talus and snow covered slopes in solitude I ran into one of my greatest photo inspirations, Marc Adamus, who had arrived here via helicopter ('cuz he's a boss like that). With heavy packs, steep slippery routes and average nightly temperatures of 2 degrees Fahrenheit, this was one of the most physically challenging, but rewarding trips I've ever taken. The water cycle is truly working in hyper-speed up here The three days I was there bore that out. After a small break in the clouds the sun quickly started evaporating everything throwing mist and great shafts of light all over the place. I shot this area of arcing mossy limbs earlier in total rainy gloom and returned here to find this gloriously backlit scene. Wind was ripping at 30mph from the northeast with an armada of scattered clouds casting momentarily brilliant spot lighting here, there and everywhere. As soon as I set up for a shot, the light moved on and tempted me elsewhere. It was enthralling and beautiful, but full of missed photo opportunities. As the afternoon progressed the light became more predictable with a few long strips of clouds partially covering the sky, but the wind showing no signs of relenting. I returned to this spot hoping its location on the southwest side of a steep hill would afford me some respite to shoot non-blurry focus stacked flowers in fading light. That was very optimistic. This picture is made up of a series of different focus points taken between huge gusts of wind and meticulously blended together by hand. Perhaps, I'm just a sucker for badlands and missing the southwest, but I couldn't disagree more. I think the depth and overall shape of these foothills are spectacular. By no means was this area the most flower dense or colorful, but just after sunset the sky cast a nice orangey light across these hills and I couldn't resist some pre-dinner telephoto fun.
